    Bugs are necessary for compost bins for the simple reason that they do the composting!

    Fungi can do some of it, but usually, the majority of the compost break down comes from bugs.

    If your compost pile is healthy, you should find white cobwebby material throughout it.  This is actinomycete, an important part of the microbial community.

    There is such a thing as too many bugs, or the wrong kind of bugs, but generally speaking, bugs are great for compost.  The attached link has more information.
