Why is it against the rules at some beaches and parks to take rocks, shells, pinecones, etc.? What is the harm if they’re not alive?

Taking items from beaches and parks like pinecones, rocks, and seashells is not so detrimental for the items that you are taking, but more so because it is distrubing the ecosystem as a whole. Those pieces are a part of that eco system and might serve as partial or whole habitats for other living species and contribute to the overall balance of that area.
