Sustainability as a lifestyle choice happens because of a deep awareness of the environmental damage being caused by human beings and also an ability to have this sort of lifestyle. It doesn’t catch on when there is ignorance or denial of the issue, and when the issue is known but there are larger concerns such as basic daily sustenance to worry about.
Actually, I think it’s mainly about entitlement. People have become accustomed to a certain standard of living in industrialized countries. There is going to be an inherent resistance towards anything that jeopardizes, or at least complicates, that way of life, and despite the ramifications humans tend to be more concerned with immediate gratification rather than the future, just from a general standpoint, anyway.
