Why is a horseshoe crab called a horseshoe crab?

A horseshoe crab is called such because it is the same shape as a horse’s hoof, and a horseshoe. A horseshoe crab isn’t actually a crab, but is in its class (merostomata).

I love horseshoe crabs! They’re the last survivor of an ancient group of animals and have hardly changed at all in over 200 million years.  Other fun facts about horseshoe crabs are that they can go a year without eating and (my favorite) their blood is actually blue, and important in medical research.
