Why have whale sharks been so difficult to study?

Whale sharks are difficult to study because like most large sea creatures (whales, great white sharks, giant squid), they can travel long distances at relatively high speeds. Whale sharks are especially difficult to study because they move in what seems to be an unpredictable pattern, and can dive more than a mile under the surface. Recent electronic tagging studies have found out more about these elusive sharks.
