Mount Ngaurauhoe has been an active volcano for so long because it lies in an active volcanic zone. The Taupo Volcanic Zone is part of the ring of fire, which includes all the volcanoes along each edge of the pacific plate where subduction is occurring. In subduction, the oceanic plate is pushed underneath the continental plate and pockets of magma escape forming volcanoes.
