Why has the EPA advised water supplies to be tested for toxins?

Toxins are present in water, even in drinking water from taps and bottles. Most water contains unhealthy toxins including, but not limited to, arsenic, fluoride, and chlorine. Arsenic, a toxic heavy metal, is actually a cancer causing agent – surely, it is a danger to humans. Fluoride, another toxic substance, is found in bottled water, baby formula, toothpaste, and deliberately added to tap water. It is so toxic, even more than lead, that some U.S. cities have begun to reject the process of fluoridation. Additionally, chlorine is added to water to kill bacteria. As it makes its way through the body, chlorine bonds with other compounds, posing a major threat to humans as it causes cell damage.

Much of our water is already tested for toxins. In fact, tap water is often cleaner than bottled water. As shaunabannan mentioned, arsenic is one toxic element that can be found in water. Thankfully, this is also one of the toxins already monitored. Here is a list of the top 100 tap water suppliers in the United States. Even if your water supplier is not on the list, chances are that your water is safe to drink. Information about what is in your water should be publicly available, so just check with your local water supplier.
