Why has the East Antarctica Ice Sheet held up better than the West Antarctica Ice Sheet?

Though any expanse of ice is threatened by global warming, the West Antarctica Ice Sheet (WAIS) is much less stable. Large areas of it sit below sea level, and if certain floating ice shelves disappear, the whole area is vulnerable to collapse. The EAIS and Greenland Ice Sheets do not sit so precariously or so far below sea level, so they are predicted to be more stable.
