Due to environmental concerns associated with overfishing, Chile has designated separate fishing zones for the ‘artisanal’ fishermen and industrial fishing fleets. After commercial fishing zones were established, scientist worked with small-scale fishermen to rebuild the fishery through volunteer agreements.
Chile’s decision to have designated artisanal fishing zones is to counter the negative effects of industrial fishing there; the goal is to rebuild the fisheries by halting practices that have left some Chilean waters staggeringly overfished. By allowing only small-scale fishing and excluding the industrial fishing ships from an area, the fish population has a chance to recharge itself and grow in number.
