Poor government policies, coupled with discrimination in the workplace, have been cited as reasons why many Japanese women avoid having children. Women are worried about the future, and want to be able to continue working without facing a heavy financial burden as a result of having children. Additionally, women delay getting married and having children because of the desire to enjoy an independent lifestyle.
Some believe its because women have more opportunities in the career world and extending the retirement age from 65 to 70. Many women in the country say its because the government has not done enough to help. Japan’s government spends little on child-rearing when compared to other first-world nations. It is also thought young women are not having children because they do not have the finances.
