Why has Al Gore become so prominent in climate change issues?

Al Gore has taken it upon himself to be the face of climate change.  In his novel/film “An Inconvenient Truth”, Gore states that the research he presents is not his, he only wants to share it with the world.  As a powerful political figure in the U.S., particularly his run as Vice President from 1992-2000, Gore and his family have used their fame to promote environmentally friendly lifestyle changes and the truth about climate change.  Gore has actually been touring since the 1980’s and lecturing about human-induced climate change, even before the public opinion believed it was true.  While criticized for his inflated facts and misleading graphs, Gore has used mass media to inform the public and raise money to help combat human-induced climate change.
