Why is hail so damaging to crops?

    For much the same reason it is damaging to property or people. Hail breaks the stems of plants and knocks them to the ground. The stem is important because it is how the plant feeds itself bringing nutrients and water up from the soil to be used in the production of energy through photosynthesis and growing new leaves. Furthermore, if they are on the ground they may not receive the sunlight they need. There are some interesting photos at the link below.
