Google was never comfortable with creating a censored version of their product so that China would allow their citizens to use it, but they did so to give the citizens of China more access to information. Now, they have discovered that China attempted to attack Google’s corporate infrastructure, primarily to access the accounts of several Chinese Gmail users who are human rights activists. Google discovered that they are not the only industry experiencing intellectual property theft in this ay, and also that several other human rights activists’ Gmail is being monitored, not through them but through malware on the users’ computers.
Google considers this an uncondonable violation of their rights. Unless the government is willing to let them launch an uncensored version of their site, which is unlikely, Google can no longer work with China.
