Why is gas so much more expensive in the UK?

Gas is more expensive in the UK and other European countries because the government imposes a large tax on it. This is in stark contrast to the US, where the gas tax is very small. Having expensive gas is far from a bad thing, though. It causes people to drive less, relying more on biking and public transportation. This in turn decreases greenhouse gas emissions, which cause environmentally destructive global warming to occur.
