Gangrene is cell and tissue death caused by lack of circulation. The cells in the body need blood to stay alive and if they are deprived of blood (therefore deprived of oxygen) cells start to break down and die. There could be lack of circulation because of bacteria or a thrombosis (blockage in a blood vessel). Some gangrene can be reversed with revascularization (restoration of the blood flow) if acted upon quickly, but most of the time the necrotic (dead) tissue area must be amputated.
