Why is France’s nuclear power plan so successful?

France now gets the majority of its electricity from nuclear power plants.  This makes it almost completely independent on foreign oil for electricity generation, needing only a few pounds of heavy metal to power a city for a year.  France has also done a lot of work educating its people about the benefits and the dangers of nuclear power, and have been very open to exploration — more than six million French people have taken tours of nuclear power plants.  This education leads to the fact that over two-thirds of France is strongly in favor of nuclear energy.
