This new mining technology is said to lead to serious water contamination. Duke Univeristy researchers found an increase in methane levels in 13 to 26 wells in northeatern Pennsylvania. Additionally, The New York Times obtained EPA documents that revealed that wastewater from fracking is more radioactive than what is deemed safe for handling by treatment plants. A 2009 ProPublica investigation found over a thousand reports of water contamination as well.
