In order for coffee to be certified fair trade, it must be grown following standards for environmental sustainability. Farmers cannot use agrochemicals or genetically modified seeds, and must practice conservation of water and proper waste disposal. Farmers are also encouraged to alternate crops to protect soil health.
fair trade allows the farmers of many crops to gain more profit by faming in an ecologically sound way. It supports a ground-up approach to ecologial as well as humanitarian sustainability, allowing those collectives responsible for putting the effort in to abstinence from pesticides and harmul deforesting processes to be directly supported by consumers.
