Why is factory fishing so bad?

Factory fishing is considered the “strip mining” of the sea.  So many fish are caught at once with these ships that populations of fish are decimated.  A great example of this is the Cod Population off the coasts of Newfoundland.  There the fish levels have declined so much that even subsistence-level cod fishing is affected.
