Facebook is getting a lot of “crap” from Greenpeace over coal power. Facebook recently announced the construction of a new data center to run the Facebook server on. This center will use energy-efficient computers, but unfortunately, the center will be powered by a coal plant. Coal is the most dirty form of energy generation we still use, producing millions of tons of CO2 and other greenhouse gases per year…as well as producing other pollutants. Greenpeace wants Facebook to commit to using sustainable and renewable energy sources for their new data center. They’re specifically targeting Facebook because it is so widely-used, and this is a really good opportunity to educate people about the importance of renewable energy sources.
