An increase in precipitation such as rain and snowfall is an early sign of global warming. This is because rises in surface temperature causes an increase in the amount of evaporation of water which will in turn result in more precipitation. Snowfall is not just a matter of cold temperatures. Conditions of water vapor must be present as well in order for snow to fall. The storm that just dumped snow across much of America was just lots and lots of rain out here in Southern California.
Short-term changes are weather; long-term changes are climate. Changes in long-term cycles are climate change.
