That is a good question! I am going to assume it is a cultural reason, because throughout history Western civilization has had a strange relationship with nature. Often people want to seperate themselves from nature or conquer nature instead of realizing that humans are part of nature and we cannot be seperated from it. We pollute our world and then forget that we have to live in it and deal with the consequences of our harmful actions. In short Earth Day came to be in the 1970s, around the time when the modern environmental movement was taking shape. Earth Day acts to create awareness of something we should always be aware of, as it is part of our daily life!
