Earth Day’s main effect is that it allows people to stop and think about the effects we have on nature and vica versa. It works as a way to remind us that we were once in bondage, a slave to nature and its woes. Anthropologist Margret Mead explains it the best, “EARTH DAY is the first holy day which transcends all national borders, yet preserves all geographical integrities, spans mountains and oceans and time belts, and yet brings people all over the world into one resonating accord, is devoted to the preservation of the harmony in nature and yet draws upon the triumphs of technology, the measurement of time, and instantaneous communication through space.”
It promotes awareness, and is the one day when the most people will get together and make a positive impact. It may not seem like a lot, but every little effort matters, and when the world shuts off its lights or tries to save energy, if for only one day, it has a significant impact. And hopefully, each year more people will come on board when they realize how easy and cheap these changes can be.
Earth day is important because it is an annual reminder that we have a responsibility to the earth and the environment. Hopefully most people try to remember this every day, but earth day is a nice to event to focus attention on responsibility and environmental issues because it is a day that celebrates the earth in all of its goodness.
