why dry land becomes green after raining

Even dry land often contains dormant seeds from plants (mostly grass, but many other kinds of weeds and shrubs as well). These seeds are simply waiting for the proper conditions (moisture, temperature, sunlight) to germinate. When they do so after a rain, it means they were in need of some water, received it, and found a foothold to continue a new phase of life.
