Why don’t we reuse soda bottles anymore in America?

Some people reuse plastic soda bottles. They are washable, so they can be emptied, cleaned, and then refilled with whatever liquid one wants to refill them with. They can also be reused for other purposes (besides drinking from them), such as making a planetarium or a craft. I do think that we should be re-using containers (after washing them, of course) more often than we are recycling them or throwing them in a landfill. It seems like it is the least energy intense method for doing things.
