There is increasing popularity of white boards and new technology like SmartBoards. Chalk boards may be bad for students’ health because they may breath in the chalk dust. SmartBoards are really new and are just starting to spread in private and charter schools, so it may be a while before they reach public schools.

Often the contrast of a white board is easier to see, as well.
My mom is a school teacher and she doesn’t have a single chalkboard in her room anymore. She has a smartboard and several whiteboards. The chalkboards were taken away because of how much dust they produce. Also, teachers can do more with a smartboard in terms of making interactive lesson plans and having more options for teaching.
