Why don’t clams and mussels form pearls?

Clams and mussels do form pearls, however it is a much rarer occurrence. The majority of pearls in circulation are from oysters. Pearls are formed because an irritant gets in between the shell and the mantle of one of these organisms and is covered up with a substance called “nacre” to protect itself. Nacre is the same substance the organism uses to make its shell!
