As of 2007, the U.S. allows mangoes imported from India, but only one out of the approximately 1500 varieties of mango that can be found in the country. Previously, Indian mangoes had been banned from the U.S. for about 20 years due to tight FDA regulations of the fruit. The prevalence of seed weevils in the mangoes had prevented the FDA from allowing the U.S. to import them, but the fruits are now irradiated before being exported to the U.S.
