Why doesn’t the U.S. have a Secretary of the Environment?

The US doesn’t have a Secretary of the Environment because it would be redundant – we already have a Secretary of Energy. While the Secretary of Energy’s position was originally created to regulate energy production, it has since broadened to include development of technology for more efficient energy sources and use as well as focus on “maintaining environmental quality.”
