Americans, unfortunately, see powerful cars as a status symbol. Americans invest a lot of their identities in the size of their cars. Plus, industries market cars to people with more horsepower than they need. Even with electric cars, large auto manufacturers won’t make/market things that don’t have a certain amount of horsepower. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. Some Americans see going green as the ultimate status symbol and make their own green vehicles. I’m sure that someone somewhere took out the engine in their car and replaced it with a 1 liter engine. More people just go all-out and make their cars electric, though.
