Why does your skin form calluses?

Calluses are the bodies defense against excessive pressure and friction.  Often found on heels and toes, calluses form from the accumulation of dead skins cells that harden around the irritated zone.  High heels or ill fitted shoes are often the cause of foot calluses, but weight lifters know that they can also form on the hands.  While deep calluses (intractable plantar keratosis) can be painful, not all calluses are bad and can even be beneficial.
