Why does your breath get red when you are straining or holding your breath?

Your breath doesn’t get red, rather your face gets red because of increased blood preasure to your capilaries.  As you strain and hold your breath, your heart beats harder in order to distribute oxygen throughout your body.  This is also the reason, by the way, that your face gets red when you are exercising or exerting yourself.
