Why does the water line retreat before a tsunami, and how much warning does this provide?

The drawdown (A noticeable sudden retreat of the water) is caused by a depression the large incoming wave creates. The drawdown usually occurs 5-15 mins before the tsunami hits depending on wave size. It is so strong that it can pull ships and people swimming back into the ocean.
