Why does vinegar smell so bad?

Vinegar is made through a process of the fermentation of ethanol yielding acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid. Acetic acid in its pure form is terrible smelling. Vinegar usually contains a 4-8 percent concentration of ethanoic acid. This accounts for the bad smell.
