Why does the U.S. have such an undeveloped rail system compared with most European countries?

Back in the 1930s and 40s when cars were one of the fastest growing industries in the world especially in America, the country focused on building highways throughout the states in order to connect people since everyone was buying cars. The focus and want for trains in Europe has just always been higher than that in the states, all of the countries have come together and agreed and efficient rail system is one of the best ways to connect the continent. The United States never had that passion due to different laws and land rights within the different states and now people see it as too expensive to start building an intricate and efficient line throughout the country.
