Why does the United States help so many other countries?

The United States helps other countries to ensure regional stability.  For example the U.S. has long supported Israel as well as the peace process, (or status quo) between Israel and Palestine.  This ensures regional stability for oil exporting countries, against nationalistic powerhouses like Iran.  The U.S. has also given military aid to Iraq, Egypt, and Turkey as a way of ensuring that U.S. friendly governments will remain in power.  The primary motivation for this is oil extraction.  This is historically evident as the U.S. has become increasingly involved in the middle east only as oil supplies dwindled elsewhere.  That aside, the U.S. depends on a vast network of trading and military allies to assert power across the globe.  Aid is just a way of ensuring that governments friendly to the U.S. stay in power.
