Why does the UN say that women bear more of the brunt of climate change than men?

Around the world, the segments of the population that are already the most disadvantaged socially will find themselves hit hardest by new problems caused by global warming. In much of the developing world, women are the ones mainly responsible for growing crops that will be impacted by changing climates. Gender inequality in many countries leaves women with less access to schooling and careers, meaning that their opportunities to get a job that allows them to escape from areas impacted by drought and other disasters is limited. Finally, women in most parts of the world are still the ones mainly responsible for caring for children; this again limits their mobility and opportunity to escape, and means that food and water shortages which affect children are felt even more severely. In addressing global warming on an international scale, it is essential that the huge impact on women be taken into account.
