Why does the Toyota Prius have so many fans?

My understanding is that it has the functionality and sleekness of gas-powered cars, but now as a hybrid.  Before, Hybrid or electric cars were clunky, not easy to obtain and (to many people) very ugly looking.  The Prius is one of the first mass-produced hybrid cars, and it pretty much changed that.

The Toyota Prius is very fuel-efficient and with so many of them being purchased, global emissions have definitely decreased. Toyota has calculated that the amount of Prius’ that have been sold has reduced global emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by about 11 million tons. Therefore, people are not only driving a well-designed vehicle, but a vehicle that is helping the earth as well.
