Thunder is actually the sound that of lighting. Lighting is so hot it causes the air around it to expand so quickly that it creates the boom we know as thunder. Since light travels faster then sound we will usually see the lighting before we hear the boom, or the thunder. Likewise the closer together the lightning and the thunder in time are the closer you are to the lightning strike. So if you see and hear them at the same time you better hit the ground!
