Ted Turner actually already has approximately 50,000 mostly domestic bison on ranches in the western states, which he uses for his restaurant Ted’s Montana Grill. However, he is proposing to keep the 74 Yellowstone bison on his private ranch for their genetic value. Montana’s wildlife agency hopes to eventually use the bison as a starting pool for new herds on public lands. The state was unable to find a place to keep the bison during their quarantine period, so Turner stepped in. He will keep them for the five years remaining in the quarantine period, and in return will get to keep 90% of their offspring, a potential of 190 animals.
