Why does a sunburn turn your skin red?

When the skin is burnt or injured in some way redness is the inflammatory response to this damage.  The redness and burning sensation is a result of the blood vessels enlarging near the skin’s surface to allow the white blood cells to fight off foreign invaders, while removing dead cells, and repairing the damaged tissue.

The UV rays from the sun is what causes the burn damage, and it also does damage to the DNA of the skin cells. Therefore, dermatologists ALWAYS recommend applying sun screen to prevent this type of damage,  if you are out in the sun for long periods of time.
