Why does the sun change colors when there is a wild fire?

The sun itself does not actually change colors during a wildfire.  However, with so much smoke and ash in the air, a barrier is created between us and the sun.  Through this smoke “barrier,” it is possible for the sun to appear to be a redish-orange color.
