The simple answer is friction. The space shuttle is traveling at tremendous speeds well beyond the supersonic. The air particles that crash against it cause friction and the friction causes heat. This is not an issue with regular air travel because the speeds are so low, but the faster you go the great the friction and heat that processes it.
