Why does salt from roads mess up the paint on cars?

the granules are rather large and can be sharp on some sides, and when your driving the salt kicked up from other cars that hits yours can scratch tiny parts of the paint off. when this happens the corrosive salt can accelerate the car bodies metal to rust. if there are any previous scratches on your cars paint this can help the process even more.
