Why does salt make things float easier?

This has to do with density.  When salt is present in water, the water becomes more dense.  When the water is more dense than the object that is in the water, the object floats.  So basically, the more salt there is in water, the better the object floats.  A person will not float well in a swimming pool because the density of the water is not high but the same person will float much better in the dead sea, where the salt concentration and thus the density of the water is very high.
