Why does potassium explode when it hits water?

    Potassium, K, reacts with water to form potassium hydroxide and water.
    In addition a fair amount of heat is released in this reaction. The heat released is sufficient to ignite a hydrogen-oxygen reaction
    which can be rather explosive
