Why does the pacific northwest have so many hydroelectric power plants?

Hydroelectric power plants are simply well-suited to the region. The area has plenty of rivers and gets a relatively high amount of rainfall on average, so hydroelectric plants are easy to build and maintain. However, they are looking into alternative sources of power because of the fluctuation in energy production between wet and dry years and the problems they face if there is a drought.
