Why does oil make that fluorescent sheen on the surface of water? Can it be removed?

The reason oil looks like a rainbow of colors on the surface of water is because of a lense effect. The oil spreads on the water into a thin film, which lies flat on the surface of the water. This creates a kind of prism which causes light to split into the spectrum.

Oil can be removed from water by the use of special cleansers. Click the second link below for more information on oil clean-ups.
