Why does moisture in the air help you when you have a head cold?

    Much of the discomfort from a head cold is caused by irritation of membranes in the sinus cavity.  Dry air can further irritate those membranes, while moist air can sooth membranes.  Moisture, especially steam, can also help break up congestion and wash away bacteria or irritants.  Here is an article on home remedies for a head cold, including a couple that suggest various ways to introduce moisture to the sinuses.
