Why does lightning happen more in the summer than in the winter?

Lightning occurs more in the summer than the winter due to the favorable storm conditions in the summer. Heat and moisture are the driving forces behind lightning, and humid, summer air is more likely to contain moisture than cold, winter air. Thus, while lightning is still possible in the winter, it occurs more often during the summer.
